• January to April: Ideal for visiting the south and west coastlines, including Colombo, Kalpitiya, Bentota, and Galle. • October to November: Known as the inter-monsoon period, these months see the Maha monsoon affecting the northeastern region while keeping the southern and western parts relatively dry. • December: Considered a good month to travel across the whole country, December offers sunshine and relatively dry weather. It's an excellent time to explore various regions of Sri Lanka, including the Yala National Park and cultural sites like Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Kandy.

Activities to do in each month in Sri Lanka

January: Knuckles Mountain Range is a great hiking destination in January. It is a UNESCO Natural World Heritage area that boasts diverse flora and glorious scenery of tea estates, cloud forest, and waterfalls. Its off-the-beaten-track location, an hour from Kandy, means that these are some of the quietest Sri Lanka trekking trails.

February: Adam's Peak is a challenging hike that is best done in February. Ascend Sri Lanka's sacred peak on a 3- to 4-hour night-time hike in time to witness one of the most spectacular sunrises in Asia. During the pilgrimage season (December to March), you will be joined by hundreds of devotees. Most of this climb involves steep and uneven steps.

March: Explore the renowned national parks like Yala National Park, offering lush greenery perfect for hikes and nature photography.

April: Little Adam's Peak is a great hike for families traveling with young children. It is not as high or as difficult to climb as the sacred mountain of Adam's Peak, and the trek up this hill leads you through a tea plantation with manicured tracks and flights of steps. The peak offers gorgeous bird's-eye views of the green valleys and mist-laden mountain tops of Sri Lanka. May: Traverse the tea plantations in the hill country, witness the tea-making process up close, and visit scenic hill stations like Nuwara Eliya and Ella for picturesque landscapes..

June: Experience thrilling whale watching off the southern coast, especially in Mirissa and Trincomalee, as the seas become serene during this time.

July: Pidurangala Rock is a great hike in July. It often overshadows neighboring Sigiriya Rock Fortress and boasts its own ancient cave temple. Hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of Sigiriya Rock when they reach the summit. Due to the ‘rock scrambling’ section, Pidurangala is a slightly challenging climb.

August: Ella Rock is a great hike in August. It offers an awe-inspiring view of the hill country and is a great spot to sight the sunrise. The hike to the top of Ella Rock is along a comparatively less beaten track and takes you through tea plantations and forests.

September: Lipton’s Seat is a great hike in September. It is the favorite viewpoint of Sir Thomas Lipton, a Scottish planter who made his fortune developing tea estates here in the late 19th / early 20th century. Begin at Dambatenne Tea Factory and follow the 7km paved path through picturesque tea estates to the top. The tea country vistas from the Lipton’s Seat viewpoint are utterly breath-taking.
